May 4, 2009 - Wind Simplicity’s Windancer Wins National Energy Globe Award – Canada
Canadian company Wind Simplicity™ Inc was awarded a prestigious National Energy Globe Award 2009 for outstanding achievements in sustainability.
Wind Simplicity designed the high-efficiency, compact, noise-free Windancer™, a new-generation small wind turbine, using the maple leaf as inspiration for the wind blades.
Wind Simplicity’s Windancer was selected from 769 projects submitted from 111 nations to win an award.
The third award won by Wind Simplicity, the Energy Globe Awards are likely the world’s most high-profile environmental prize. Wind Simplicity, from Ontario, was also awarded a 1st Place in the Green Dot Awards in 2008, and the Gold Design Exchange Award in Engineering in 2007. Wind Simplicity has also been nominated for a 2009 Index Award.
The Windancer was acknowledged by the Energy Globe Award’s independent renewable energy panel for excellence in environmental protection and energy efficiency.
“The unique 8-blade Windancer is likely to have the lowest start-up speed for a wind turbine at 1 meter-per-second,” said Sharolyn Vettese, Inventor and CEO of Wind Simplicity.
“Not only does the Windancer generate cost-free, pollution-free electricity from the wind, it’s also compact, yet highly efficient, so it can be installed closer to people. Renewable energy can therefore be used first onsite so less is wasted,” she added.
“This not only minimizes loss of energy via transmission over long distances but also land use. For example, high rises can be used as towers for the Windancer. The Windancer can be retrofitted to homes, malls, factories and is ideal for remote-communities and developing countries - anywhere there are good wind resources.”
Ms. Vettese said that decentralizing power generation could dramatically reduce global power CO2 emissions.
“We electricity consumers should be encouraged to have the choice of producing our own green energy onsite. It’s more efficient and gives us greater independence in a power outage,” she said.

It was in 2004 that Ms. Vettese, an environmental activist from North York, set out to design a wind turbine with her father, Dr. Alfred Mathieu, who trained as a mechanical engineer. They looked to nature to solve problems of noise and vibration, inventing an attractive generator with features that would facilitate municipal approval.
Ms. Vettese derived the inspiration for the Windancer’s “Samara” wind blade from the maple’s namesake winged seed.
“The Windancer owes its beauty and efficiency to Canada’s national symbol, the maple leaf, so it’s absolutely wonderful to have won an award that puts small Canadian wind turbines on the map,” she said.
Accepting the award in April, presented by Jan Dusik, Czech Deputy Environment Minister, and Professor Edward Solomon Ayensu, President CSIR Ghana, at Prague’s Veletržní Palác, Ms. Vettese held a blue jay and wild turkey feather wand. The wand was just one feature of her interpretation of Canada’s national costume that highlighted her concern for wildlife.
“It was an important design consideration that the Windancer’s multiple blades, which can be painted different colours, be more visible to birds,” she said.
The National Energy Globe Awards were chaired by Maneka Gandhi, Indian Environmental Minister 1989–1991, founding member of People for Animals, India, and patron of Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF).
