Students Put New Spin On Wind Turbine Design
June 14, 2011, Toronto ON - Wind Simplicity congratulates secondary students from PACE, Richmond Hill and from Rehoboth Christian School (RCS), Norwich for winning Wind Simplicity’s Design Innovation Award.
The new breed of small wind turbine inventors, from the teams PACE Invaders and Gerrit Ten Hove Team 2 (RCS), came up with some unique-looking designs for WindENG 2011.
Banning three-blade designs, WindENG encourages the students to really think about original ways of solving design problems that may lead to more effective solutions.
The annual secondary school small wind turbine design challenge is run by the University of Guelph’s School of Engineering.
This is the second year that Wind Simplicity presented the Design Innovation Award in the spirit of the contest that nurtures creativity.
The event, held on April 29 at the University of Guelph, put over 300 students from Ontario to the test.
The teams had to present their small wind turbines to a panel of judges, including Wind Simplicity adviser and co-inventor, Dr. Alfred Mathieu.
Pupils fielded judges’ questions about the merits of their inventions built to the specifications of the university’s wind tunnel, where they were headed next.
The wind generators that could survive the tunnel’s wind stream and generate the most power at a wind speed of 5 meters per second had a chance to take out the competition.
"The wind tunnel is key to the students’ success in this competition. Most importantly, WindENG gets students thinking about wind turbines, " said Dr Mathieu. "They did very well."
