Global youth job crisis inspires inventor of multi-award-winning wind
turbine to speak up at China Summit.
October 12, 2011, Toronto ON – Inventor and manufacturer of the multi-award-winning Windancer horizontal-axis small wind turbine, Sharolyn Vettese, says that the future looks bleak for much of the world's youth.
With the UN International Labour Organization declaring youth employment a world priority this year, Ms Vettese, C.E.O of Canadian company Wind Simplicity, said she was very concerned.
"It seems that jobs for young people have become the scarcest during the financial crisis," she said.
Stating that Canada's youth unemployment rate was currently very high, at around 14 per cent, and that it was even higher in Britain, hovering at around 21 per cent, she added:
"I'm very worried for young people. It's obvious that many are becoming despondent about the future. August's youth-led riots in the U.K. were a strong signal that governments need to act."
Her unease has inspired her to share her experience and views on creating manufacturing jobs in the new green economy at China's Low Carbon Earth Summit (LCES).
Ms. Vettese will present her paper titled What are the types of jobs that can be created in the new green economy? at the LCES 2011 in Dalian, China, on October 22 at 9:00 am at the Dalian World Expo Center.
She will be discussing how small wind turbine companies like Wind Simplicity can provide local manufacturing jobs, as well as the role business, governments and consumers can play in driving job growth in the renewable energy sector.
"China, as a major world power, is embracing the green economy to increase employment this century. China should be complimented on its plan to cut its carbon dioxide emissions and on its large-scale investment in a low carbon economy," Ms.Vettese said.
"Countries that invest in a green energy economy will build sustainable employment in these times of economic uncertainty and youth unemployment and disquiet."
She added that work in the alternative energy sector was rewarding and that rewarding jobs were the key to future social stability.
"Wind Simplicity designs, manufactures, installs and maintains the Windancer small wind turbine. Providing a turn-key system, the company creates employment in rural Ontario, Toronto, and internationally," said Ms. Vettese.
"Around 50 suppliers are affected by our product; when we grow, they grow too. Wind Simplicity's manufacturing jobs can help provide the same prosperity in the 21st Century as the auto sector did in the 20th Century but with an even smaller environmental footprint. That's because of the sustainable life-cycle and production of our wind turbine."
Themed "Leading the Green Economy, Returning to Harmony with Nature", the aim of LCES-2011 is to provide a world-class meeting place for trade and information exchange covering issues from both the public and private sectors regarding climate change.
